IS JAPAN COOL? DISCOVER
牛丼
Gyudon(beef-on-rice bowl)
1. Thin-sliced beef thoroughly simmered with onions for a salty-sweet taste, then poured over a bowl of rice. A common type of Japanese fast food.
2. Beef-eating culture was introduced at the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868) under the influence of Western culture. Gyumeshi (beef rice), the forerunner of gyudon, was created around that time to satisfy the public appetite for beef.
3. Popular among students and Japanese business people as a cheap, tasty, and fast choice of meal.
4. Three major gyudon franchise stores have been locked in a discount price war since economic stagnation and deflation became prolonged trends in Japan.
5. Some gyudon fanatics prefer special orders like tsuyu-daku (extra soup), negi-nuki/span> (no onions), and niku-nuki/span> (no beef), which is really no longer gyudon. These are not displayed in the menu but served on request at no extra charge.
