厳島神社

Itsukushima Shrine

1. Shrine in Itsukushima, Hiroshima, one of Japan’s three most celebrated scenic landscapes. It is located on an island that has been worshipped as a sacred spirit from ancient times.

2. Meticulously maintained and frequently renovated, this beautiful shrine has endured as a holy site since its foundation in 593 CE.

3. A huge 16-meter-tall torii gate stands 108 meters distant from the shrine, commanding its front entrance. The complex is designated as one of Japan’s Important Cultural Assets and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

4. Illumination begins 30 minutes after sunset. The best time to see the shrine is said to be at high tide, and the landscape is popularly considered a fantasic night view.
