Romi Mizukami
Designer for Ray BEAMS, “Kittyist”
I want to become Hello Kitty, the icon of Japan.
Ms. Mizukami has been a passionate fan of Hello Kitty ever since she saw a Kitty T-shirt in a Kitty exhibition several years ago. From then on, she started to create Kitty-style fashions. “Hello Kitty’s charm comes from the color balance of red, navy, and white, and from her, emotionless face with the mouth not drawn. Also, Kitty’s head size is almost equal to her body. I like this proportion very much,” says Ms. Mizukami. She adds, “I often use Kitty items as part of my own fashion style. I love Kitty too much, so I ended up designing Kitty goods and they are being sold now by my company brand, BEAMS!” Her cherished Kitty creations include the designs for an iPhone case and a hand mirror. “Oh, I love Kitty! I’ll go on adding Kitty items to my fashion. I wish I could be Kitty some day… I’ll keep hoping this!”
Note:
"Kittyler" is a Japanese-English term popularized in Japan that means Hello Kitty fan or "Kittyist."
