Musubimaru (“rice ball boy”)
Anime-style local mascot, PR Dept.Tourist Representative, Miyagi Prefecture
Cute community character promotes local charms.
What’s the appeal of Musubimaru? He answers, “My face looks like a big rice ball.” In fact, his head is made of rice harvested in Miyagi prefecture and he wears ornamental armor like Masamune Date, the legendary Lord of the region. He’s a lovable mascot character created to promote tourism in Miyagi Prefecture. Musubimaru says, “My job is to go many places and promote wonderful things about Miyagi. And when I don’t travel, I can be found on the first floor of Miyagi Prefectural Government Office greeting visitors.” His favorite food is sanma (Pacific saury) caught off the Sanriku seacoast. He is five years old and loves children. He proudly says, “When I go to festivals and other events, everybody — children and adults alike — are all happy and smile! I’d love to welcome you to Miyagi Prefecture!”
