IS JAPAN COOL? OKINAWA
1. A type of karate, legacy of the Okinawan karate school. Its heirs show strong proficiency in traditional martial arts, rather than game sports.
2. In fact, what we know today as karate was developed from an original Okinawa martial art called “tii” (meaning “hand” and pronounced like English “tea”), which borrowed different elements from Chinese martial arts.
3. Unlike karate dojo (training halls) found in Japan’s main islands, training in Ryukyu kobudo (archaic martial arts) such as bojutsu (stick martial art) and nunchaku technique, etc., is often provided at Ryukyu karate dojo in Okinawa.
4. Okinawa is regarded as holy ground by karate athletes around the world, who seek the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience traditional karate training. Thus, many international fans visit Ryukyu karate dojo and attend Ryukyu karatecompetitions.
