1. Glass craft and glass sculpture originated in 1834 in the city of Edo (old Tokyo). This 170-year-old craft tradition is officially recognized as a national treasure.

2. Edo kiriko glass cutting imitates nature, recreating chrysanthemum flowers or hemp leaf patterns also found in kimono patterns. The nanako pattern, which uses fish egg shapes as an ornamental motif, is particularly famous.

3. Glasses for cold drinks and sake are popular souvenir goods. There are glass-crafting studios in Tokyo allowing visitors to experience making kiriko.

4. In Tokyo Soramachi, a new shopping/entertaining area adjacent to Tokyo Sky Tree, the shop names are cut on glass lanterns using Edo kiriko cutting techniques.
