Yokai Costume Parade

1. In Japanese folklore, hyakki yagyo is a night parade of 100 yokais (monsters and goblins). This is said to have occurred during the Heian era, when noblemen carried talismans bestowed by their fortunetellers to avoid running into yokais.

2. Ichijo Dori street where hyakki yagyo is said to have taken place is now called “Yokai Street” and various yokai festivities are held here.

3. One popular event is the Yokai Costume Parade, which recreates the hyakki yagyo in the present day. While some marchers wear ghastly realistic costumes and others are clad in cute outfits, all participants enjoy the parade in their own fashion.

4. In recent years, many international tourists can be spotted along the parade route. Terrified screaming kids are a common sight at this event.
