Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology
Nagoya city
Toyota’s worldwide manufacturing, right before your eyes!
One famous company has spread from Aichi around the world—Toyota. At the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, you can experience everything from the history to technology of Toyota. It receives so many visitors from overseas that English tours are held every day, many exhibits are also listed in English, and staff can speak English. A number of travel sites, including TripAdvisor, have praised the Museum’s extensive exhibitions and attentive hospitality.
From textiles to cars!? The unknown history of Toyota.
The Museum is broadly divided into the Textile Machinery Pavilion and the Automobile Pavilion. It’s not well known even in Japan, but Toyota was founded as a manufacturer of textile machinery. Using the textile factory built by company founder Sakichi Toyoda in 1911, the Textile Machinery Pavilion presents around 100 historic textile machines. Toyota’s turn from the textile industry to the automobile industry might seem surprising, but if you look at the precise movement of the machines, it becomes clear that this precision was kept alive in the automotive industry. In the Automobile Pavilion, historic Toyota vehicles and production facilities are on display. Even if you’re not a car fan, the mood of this spacious venue is uplifting.
Meet the “partner robot” who plays the violin.
Toyota’s appeal lies not only in automotive manufacturing and the history surrounding it. The company is devoting its energies to developing robots as a project to create the future. The Museum refers to these as "partner robots"—robots who serve to support human lives. The violin-playing robot presented at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is here on standby, playing music from a beautiful violin 5 times a day. Take a look and get a real feel for Toyota’s creations, from the past to the future.
