Apples

Tsugaru area

Famous for apples, Aomori boasts the highest production in Japan!

For the Japanese, Aomori conjures images of apples. It produces the most apples in Japan, of course, but it’s also distinguished from other prefectures by the flavor and varieties of its apples. Aomori’s greatest production is of the Fuji variety, which is grown in the area centered on Hirosaki known as the Tsugaru region. Fuji apples have a moderate acidity with a pleasant crunchy texture. The taste of fresh apple juice will really open your eyes, too. If you visit Aomori, you may be surprised by authentically delicious apples.

Enjoy apples you’ve picked yourself on an apple farm.

Aomori is home to a lot of apple farmers, and apple-picking also thrives here. The apple-picking season is early July to November. At some farms, you can pick your own apples and compare varieties from among the dozens of trees cultivated. Varieties include Fuji, Tsugaru, Mutsu, Kitakurenai—you’ll be astonished how different the tastes can be. Apple-picking usually costs around 500 yen to 1000 yen per person for an unlimited time, and you usually get to take three apples home as a souvenir. Tourist numbers tend to increase on weekends in the peak season, so it’s a good idea to make bookings in advance.

The tangy, sweet aroma of apple hot springs.

In Aomori, apples are not only eaten but also put in hot spring waters. The malic acid in apples is said to have a moisturizing effect, while linoleic acid promotes blood circulation and oleic acid softens the skin, serving to replace skin oils. Famous for putting apples into hot spring water is Minamida Onsen Hotel Apple Land, where you’ll see apples bobbing in the hot water. From April to November, an apple footbath is left outside for passersby to use freely. Relax with the sweet smell of apple!
