Visit this shrine and become smarter! Tenman-gu enshrines the god of learning.

There are many shrines across Japan that bear the name “Tenman-gu”. Each one of these enshrines Sugawara no Michizane (845 to 903). Michizane is worshiped as the god of learning, sincerity, and protection from evil because of his high intelligence. Dazaifu Tenman-gu is the original shrine dedicated to Michizane. There is an especially large number of visitors to the shrine in January for the New Year’s first visit to the shrine, with two million people coming in a three day span.

The plum blossom is the flower of the shrine, and the Tobiume blossoms in the shrine grounds is said to be an effective amulet for traffic safety.

Plum trees dot the grounds of the Dazaifu Tenman-gu Shrine. Plum blossoms bloom a bit earlier than cherry blossoms, signaling the beginning of spring, making February to March the best time to see them. The 6000 plum trees of 200 different species within the premises give a festive atmosphere with their pink hue, One tree, named “Tobiume” is a must-see. It has the most white plum blossoms every year, and is over 1,000 years old. It is said to bear the blessing of traffic safety, making it a great place to visit for travelers in the area.

After your walk, take a coffee break in a famous piece of architecture!

The approach to Dazaifu Tenman-gu Shrine is lined with 80 different shops under eaves that stretch on for 400 meters. Here you’ll find a very rare Starbucks. The novel wood joinery was designed by the world-famous Kengo Kuma. This space evokes ancient Japanese architectural techniques in its 2,000 cedar beams joined without using a single nail. The tables and chairs are all originals. This is the perfect place for a coffee break after visiting the shrine.
