Aizu coating

Aizuwakamatsu

A contrast between glossy lacquer and gold decorations

Aizu coating has been designated as a traditional craft of Japan. It thrived in this area from around 1590, and its beauty was loved by aristocrats as far away as Europe. Aizu coating is characterized by its glossy black and red lacquer and the decorations drawn on it. Despite its gorgeous appearance, the base of the vessel is wood. The wood is coated over and over with lacquer made from tree resin. The faint warmth felt when the vessel is held in the hand is the blessing of the wood.

Delicate craftsmanship from lacquering to decorating

Tetsusabi-nuri, Kinmushikui-nuri, Kijiro-nuri, Hana-nuri, Makie... there is a surprising variety of Aizu coating techniques and beautiful patterns that can be drawn utilizing them. First the base vessel carved from wood such as Japanese bigleaf magnolia, Japanese horse chestnut or zelkova is carefully coated over and over with lacquer. Lacquer is applied and dried over and over again and the vessel is finally coated with red or black lacquer, etc. When a pattern is drawn, there is a moment of further tension. In the case of Makie, a pattern is drawn with lacquer and quickly sprayed with gold before the lacquer dries. This handicraft of craftsmen has a history spanning over 400 years.
