Moerenuma Park
Sapporo
Wondrous landscape fusion of nature and art
Discover a new style of urban park that captures the unique splendor, scale, and dynamism of Hokkaido. Moerenuma Park is also famous for the inspired master planning of celebrated artist, sculptor, and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi. The park site encompasses 188 square hectares and rises 50 meters in elevation. Seen from an aerial perspective, the artificial and natural elements of the park — shores, hills, fountains, and buildings — are harmoniously integrated for beauty of design. Its springtime cherry blossoms, summertime pools and fountains, brilliant fall leaves, and winter sledding attract visitors year round. Sculpture of the Earth — visionary design of Isamu Noguchi
Japanese-American Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) represented the 20th century art world and united Eastern and Western aesthetics through his unique artistic sensibility. In Moerenuma Park, he applied his artistic vision as a “sculptor of the Earth” to create his long-envisioned “Play Mountain” design. Tragically, he succumbed to heart failure before he could witness the ultimate realization of his dream. Now, Moerenuma Park has became Noguchi’s posthumous achievement, acclaimed by many admirers as perhaps his greatest work of art.
Glass-walled pyramid as a symbolic feature
The symbol of Moerenuma Park is glass-walled pyramid that reflects blue sky in summer and snowscapes in winter. Within this facility is a restaurant, gallery, performance space, and shop. Some say that Noguchi created this structure as an hommage to his friend, the famed architect I.M. Pei who designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris. As you survey the sweep of Sapporo City from atop Moere Mountain in the park, you can appreciate Noguchi’s pyramid as a large artwork, in addition to his other sculptures.
