Teshima - island living and cafés
Seto Inland Sea
Nature unspoiled and arts that move you
A charming spot of natural beauty with a population of about 900 residents, Teshima is one of the islands where the Setouchi Triennale international art festival takes place. It’s homey place a bit larger than Naoshima, combining unspoiled nature and country lifestyles. Art spaces can be found here and there around three museums operated by Benesse Art Site Naoshima. Teshima provides a beautiful scenic tapestry of modern arts, architecture, and nature.
Enjoy slowly passing time in an old-style folk house
Shokudou 101 diner is a renovated old-fashioned folk house that has been transformed into a restaurant. Many Japanese tourists feel like they’re at grandpa’s and grandma’s house. The mood of the diner encourages visitors to reminisce about fond memories as they enjoy old-time Japanese hospitality. This nostalgic diner is run by one woman who moved there from Osaka in 2013. She treats her guests to meals that celebrate originality and ingenuity, and as a result, the homestyle comfort offers welcome relaxation for local islanders.
Shima Kitchen in Karato area recommended for lunch
Another lunchtime choice in Teshima is Shima Kitchen where mothers from the island provide brisk service. This is “a place to meet people,” designed for a vacant house that was renovated by architect Ryo Abe to showcase “food and art” at Setouchi Triennale 2010. Shima Kitchen serves Western-style lunch featuring ample fresh seafood and citrus fruits produced in Teshima. Island specialties including fresh vegetables and homemade jams are available as souvenirs.
