Hot steam sand baths

Ibusuki City

Ever warm yourself to the core in hot, steaming sand? 300 years of hot spring steam sand baths.

Colorful parasols lie the beach of Ibusuki. Take a closer look – is that people lying on the beach buried in the sand?! This amazing sight is in fact an Ibusuki tradition stretching back over 300 years. Ibusuki’s hot steam sand baths use hot spring water welling up under the beach to warm the bodies of bathers buried in the sand to the very core.

Sweat it out and renew yourself! Three times the effect of a normal hot spring.

Reaching temperatures of 50 to 55°C, bathers slowly steam themselves in the sand over a period of ten minutes. Your body gets warmed to the very core while sweat pours from your forehead. Lying in the hot sands relaxes the body and wraps one in an amazingly comfortable sleepiness. The powerful healing effect of Ibusuki’s hot steam sand baths has been proven by the Faculty of Medicine at Kagoshima University. The department found that the baths improve blood circulation, encourage the expulsion of waste products, and reduce inflammatory and algesic substances in the body. Today, the sand baths are frequented by young women, who use them as a beauty treatment; they have also become popular among visitors to Japan as a Japanese-style sauna.

Enjoy the hot steam sand baths without any advance preparation.

There are many hot spring hotels along the beach at Ibusuki where visitors can experience the hot steam sand baths. One of these is Sa-Raku, which offers a massive sand bathing hall able to handle up to 200 bathers at a time. Just pay the bathing fee and you can borrow a light yukata robe for bathing; you can also rent face and bath towels – no need to make any special preparations before you come! Once you lie down, attendants will quickly but carefully bury you in the hot sands. Thanks to the bathing site’s roof, the baths at Sa-Raku can be used even on rainy days. In the summer and autumn, a soothing breeze blows through, making your bathing experience even more enjoyable.
