AQUA×IGNIS (Yunoyama Onsen)

Mie-gun district

An idyllic valley hot spring located to the east of Mount Gozaisho.

At a 1212-meter altitude, Mount Gozaisho, located in the northern part of Mie Prefecture, is a symbol of the local area.
At the base of this mountain, which sits almost in the center of the Suzuka mountain range, is a hot spring that has continued to provide healing calm for 1300 years. The Yunoyama Onsen hot spring nestles quietly in a valley by the Mitakigawa River. Surrounded by the Suzuka Quasi-National Park, Yunoyama offers a peaceful atmosphere and nature in abundance. With as many as 20 nearby accommodation options, you can easily spend some laid-back time here.

A new sort of comprehensive resort designed by a chef and a patissier—AQUA×IGNIS.

In 2012, a new hot spring facility was born in the Yunoyama Onsen area. The Kataoka Onsen, much-loved by locals, underwent renovation and was reborn as AQUA×IGNIS. Benefiting from the participation of Hironobu Tsujiguchi, one of Japan’s best-known pastry chefs, and celebrated Italian chef Masayuki Okuda (active in Yamagata Prefecture), in addition to a bakery and patisserie the facility also includes a dining room where visitors can enjoy Japanese food, as well as an authentic Italian restaurant based on the concept of "local production for local consumption." With a homegrown vegetable garden and strawberry patch, the grounds are also a kind of food heaven. There is an unending stream of visitors daily, ranging from locals to tourists.

A hot spring space that provides healing both before and after bathing.

The hot spring area itself is dotted with unique services. Visitors are welcomed in the entrance hall with contemporary art. Proceeding deeper, there is an indoor bath overlooking a bamboo grove as well as a liberating outdoor hot spring, and the facility also comes equipped with a rest area and library for post-bathing relaxation. There is absolutely no water added or heated here—the hot water flows 100% naturally from the spring, with its alkaline qualities making it popular as "beautifying hot water.” Naturally, accommodation is available, with each outbuilding fitted with a private outdoor hot spring bath. Reborn in the idyllic setting of Yunoyama Onsen, this popular new spot continues to offer healing incorporating the three elements of hot water, cuisine, and art.
