Guest Houses
Central Nara City
Reasonably-priced and clean - get in touch with the town and the people at a guest house.
When compared with Kyoto, Nara is on a smaller scale and has a homier feel. To fully enjoy this atmosphere, try staying at one of the many guest houses near the sights. There are a variety of styles with old Japanese houses remade into inns, and other compact, Western-style inns. Many feature services for a comfortable and convenient stay such as free Wi-Fi and bulletin boards with sightseeing information.
Within walking distance from Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park, this is the location to choose!
Guest houses only started appearing in Nara in the past few years. The oldest among these is the Nara Ugaya Guest House. The lobby is filled with guidebooks on Nara tourist spots. The rooms are clean and guests can choose from Japanese style bedding of futons or Western style bedding. One charming aspect of this guest house is the opportunity to hear the biwa performances of the owner and learn about the hot spots in Nara. For breakfast you can try the local Nara cuisine, chagayu, a tea flavored rice gruel. It comes complete with Nara style pickles and Japanese tea grown in Nara. This guest house is filled with a passion for communicating the history of Nara.
Experience the Japanese way of life in a Meiji-era merchant house.
Guesthouse Naramachi is a renovated merchant house in Naramachi. Here you can experience the Japanese way of living in a merchant house constructed in the Meiji era. They do have bedrooms, but if you’re coming to Naramachi, you should try sleeping in the traditional Japanese way on a futon spread out in a tatami room. Because this was a common merchant house, it still has typical Japanese features such as tatami, fusuma sliding doors, shoji paper sliding doors, and other aspects that will give you a deeper understanding of how the Japanese live. It is a famous inn among many overseas guests and will provide information on sightseeing tours.
