Nara Hotel
Nara City
The Western Reception Hall where Audrey Hepburn stayed.
The Nara Hotel, standing at the top of a high area in Nara Park was built in 1909. It is easy to say that this is the most high-class hotel in Nara. This hotel provides the very best hospitality, and has served the most distinguished guests from the imperial family of Japan to Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, and Albert Einstein. If you’re looking for an elegant stay in a historical location, this is definitely the place for you. With its close location to Nara Park this is the best location as a base for sightseeing.
The famous Japanese architect Kingo Tatsuno blended Japanese and Western styles in this hotel.
The wooden two-story main building of the Nara Hotel was created by Kingo Tatsuno, the architect known for designing Tokyo Station. Every one of its spaces, from Its dignified tiled roof, atrium entrance, and deep red carpeting on the main staircase feature a gorgeous design. Both Japanese and Western style guest rooms are available, with the classical ambience of the Western-style rooms in the Main Building especially recommended. It still retains the original mantelpiece from when it was built for a space truly imbued with refinement and history.
Watch the deer walk by outside your window and see the Old Daijoin Garden next door.
One other attraction of the Nara Hotel is the view from its windows. Deer visit the rich greenery of the gardens where you can watch them leisurely strolling by. Nara Park can also be seen from some of the guest rooms. A beautiful sight just next door is the Old Daijoin Garden (moved to this location in 1180) with its beautiful pond. Although it was in danger of being burned down many times in its long history, it has been protected by famous gardeners called in from Ginkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto. If you’re coming to stay at the Nara Hotel, be sure to enjoy the rich natural beauty of its surroundings.
