Terraced rice fields are rice fields built on sloping ground, first devised by farmers in mountainous regions with little farming space. Climbing a hill, you will see these rice fields overlapping in several layers; they are also known as senmaida or "thousand-fold rice fields" from their appearance. About 10% of Japan’s rice fields are terraced, and the terraced rice fields of Hoshi-toge were selected as one of "Japan’s 100 best rural spots" for their superb scenic view. People come from all over to catch a glimpse of this fantastic landscape.

Rice fields change their appearance with the four seasons

Terraced rice fields change their appearance with the growth of rice each season. After the long winter, the remaining snow and thawed water enrich the terraced rice fields in spring. Summer sees seedlings planted, covering the fields in shining green. After the golden hues of fall, winter brings completely white snowy landscapes. When winter begins in earnest, access to the terraced rice fields of Hoshi-toge becomes more difficult. The best time for sightseeing is spring to autumn.

Before visiting the terraced rice fields of Hoshi-toge, you should know the best times to go. The magic hours at morning and evening are ideal, when the rice fields float up out of the fog and the paling sky. The solemn morning landscape of rural areas is breathtakingly beautiful. Twilight is also a popular time to visit. The surface of the water in the terraced rice fields reflects the setting sun, with the mountains appearing in pink. Access to Hoshi-toge is by car only, but if possible you should aim to visit during these times.
