Matsuba Crab

Tottori and Sakaiminato

Matsuba crab – exquisite snow crab from the San’in region

When talking about winter shellfish, the Japanese always think of crab! Although Hokkaido is the most famous producer of crab in Japan, Sakaiminato in Tottori produces the most crab in all of Japan. Snow crabs caught in the Tottori area are called “Matsuba crab”. With a hard shell filled with succulent meat, only the male is called by this name. Matsuba crab is so delicious because of the plankton-rich seafloor environment of the region, resulting in crabmeat packed with flavor. Because there are few rocky places in their habitat, Matsuba crabs have distinct slender legs. This crab is the pride of Japan, with fans all over the country.

Enjoy addictive seasonal traditions in authentic settings

The best time to enjoy the elegant flavor of the Matsuba crab, which the San’in region is famous for, is from November to March. Fairly close to Sakaiminato, the Sakaiminato Direct Sales Center for Marine Products is a place where both residents and tourists can purchase Matsuba crab directly. In Japan, we have a saying: “Eat crab and become speechless.” Pulling the succulent crabmeat out of the shell is enough to make anyone dig in without thinking. That’s how addictive the taste of this crab is.

For a luxurious meal, go for the Matsuba crab full course

For a luxurious assortment of Matsuba crab dishes, try the special live Matsuba crab banquet at Kaike Kikunoya. Enjoy Matsuba crab to your heart’s content with a simple crab sashimi, grilled grab, boiled crab, and crab hot pot. In the delicate flavor you’ll discover the natural sweetness of the crab. The next thing you should try is grilled crab miso, a favorite among the Japanese. Crab miso refers not to actual miso paste, but to the innards of the crab you find inside the shell. The slightly bitter, full-flavored crab miso is delicious with Japanese sake.
