Kurobe Gorge Train

Kurobe City

Take an exciting ride through the Kurobe Gorge on an open-car train

Kurobe Gorge is the deepest V-shaped gorge in Japan. This open-car train chugs along leisurely through the nature-filled area at an average speed of 16 km/h. The real highlight of this train is just how close it brings you to the surroundings. Enjoy the natural beauty of the gorge as you gaze out at the slowly-passing scenery while feeling the breeze on your skin and listening to the sounds of the flowing waters below. The train begins its approximately 20 km journey at Unazuki and makes its final stop at Keyakidaira. The full trip takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Red bridges, green mountains, and blue gorges make for a dazzling world you’d expect to see on a postcard.

Upon departing from Unazuki, the train first approaches the Unazuki Dam. Here it crosses the Shin-Yamabiko Bridge, the longest bridge in the gorge. This crimson-red bridge creates a beautiful contrast with the surrounding scenery. Next, the Shin-Yanagawara Power Station comes into sight. A bit further down the line the train makes its way to the Atobiki Bridge, which carries it across the 60-meter deep gorge below. The train then continues deeper and deeper into the mountains, where as the nature grows wilder a variety of highlights await.

Visit the Okukane Bridge or the Information Centre once you reach the final stop, Keyakidaira.

As the train continues on its way to Keyakidaira, the final gorge to make an appearance is the Sarutobikyo Gorge. This amazing view is a designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Natural Monument. Once the train arrives at Keyakidaira – the final stop – you’ll want to indulge in a bit of exploration. The Okukane Bridge is a bridge that can be crossed on foot and features stunning views of the mountains from 34 meters above the river. If you have the time to spare, head on over to the Babadani Hotspring. Whether you only have a few hours or want to take your time and make an all-day affair out of it, the Kurobe Gorge Train offers a wide variety of options and places to visit. Choose a course that fits your schedule and enjoy yourself!
