Toyama Kitokito Airport

Toyama City

Gateway by the Sea of Japan, connected with major airports in Japan and Asia.

Toyama Kitokito Airport was opened as the only airport in Toyama Prefecture in 1963. While the official name of the airport is "Toyama Airport", it has come to be known by its popular nickname. "Kitokito" is a word in the local dialect of Toyama. It means "fresh" and "lively" and can be used to say something like "this fish is kitokito". The airport is conveniently located close to the city, just 25 minutes from JR Toyama Station by shuttle bus. A feature of the airport is its many flights to and from Asian countries such as South Korea and Taiwan.

Masuzushi, a well-known souvenir of Toyama

Masuzushi is a type of oshizushi (pressed sushi) made of vinegared trout sashimi on top of vinegared rice and wrapped in bamboo leaves. It is sold as a boxed meal. It often comes with a plastic knife, so try cutting it and eating it like you would a cake. Masuzushi is a local cuisine of Toyama, and various brands of masuzushi are available to purchase at shops in Toyama Kitokito Airport. It also keeps for a long time, making it a perfect souvenir.

If you have the time, check out this 360-degree panoramic observation deck

The view from the Toyama Kitokito Airport observation deck cannot be beat! As well as observing the airplanes, you can also admire the natural beauty of Toyama. On a clear day, you can easily see the Tateyama mountain range in the east and the riverbed to the west. In fact, Toyama Kitokito Airport is the only airport in Japan built on a river bed. The airport also houses an authentic pizzeria, "Maidohaya" - a store with a wide range of Toyama specialties, and "Kaiten Toyama Sushi" - a conveyor belt sushi store. So, you will be able to feel the charm of Toyama right up until your flight takes off.
