Yamaguchi City
The pride of Japan – where new media art is created
Japanese new media art is renowned across the world. The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media, popularly known as YCAM, is a multi-purpose facility that holds exhibits and events that use video and imaging technology as well as specialized performing arts. Generally, artists from in and outside Japan are invited to stay at YCAM while they create their respective works. There is also a wealth of educational programs for viewers, and it is constantly a space that drives the rest of Japan’s new media art.
Library, theater, and mini theater – a cozy place for citizens
Entrance to YCAM is free of charge. Anyone is welcome to come in and experience new media art. There is a library, as well as a theater and mini theater for performing arts where children, students, artists, and the general public come and go in a very open atmosphere. Ryuichi Sakamoto was selected as director for the tenth anniversary event in 2013. The facility is in touch with local sensibilities while creating events on a worldwide scale.
The building that looks like a range of mountains is architect Arata Isozaki’s masterpiece
The roof which looks like undulating mountains is the design of Japan’s premier architect, Arata Isozaki. Although this massive structure includes a library and theaters, the height was kept low so that it melts into the surrounding townscape. A park lawn spreads in front of the venue, providing a great space for relaxing break during your visit. Why not come on a clear day to enjoy both an exhibition and the park?
