Shonai Airport
Shonai
The northern gateway to Yamagata by the Sea of Japan
Shonai Airport, the gateway to Yamagata, faces the Sea of Japan in the northeast of Yamagata prefecture. The beautiful rice fields of the Shonai Plain and dynamic views of the Sea of Japan make it a charming place to land and take off. There are four round trip flights daily from Haneda Airport (as of March 2015). From Tokyo, Yamagata is easily accessible at a one hour flight. Airport signs are available in four languages for the convenience of visitors from overseas.
Meet Mameusa, the local mascot
Each region in Japan has its own local mascot. Here in Shonai Airport, you’ll find a red rabbit called Mameusa. At Shonai Airport you can buy various Mameusa items that are hard to come by in Tokyo. Mameusa is said to be a rabbit that comes down from Yamagata’s famous Mount Gassan. Take one home as a souvenir from your short stay at Shonai Airport.
Souvenir shops with Yamagata treats
There are a variety of convenient souvenir shops in the airport. If you want to keep your baggage light while traveling, these shops are great for picking up souvenirs on the way home. Popular items include the Yamagata rice brand Tsuya Hime, Dadacha Beans, and Japanese sake. You’ll be pleased to find these in individually packaged sizes. There are also mini bottles and cold packs to keep souvenirs safe on the way home.
